Location
Benelong Park is situated near Mercer Park
in Kedron. It consists of a small area of remnant Eucalypt forest that
lies on the upper flood plain of Kedron Brook. The area runs eastwards
from Benelong Street into a larger area of open space parkland circled
by the sporting complexes of John Wren Oval, Mercer Park, Murray Duus
Park and Hugh Courtney Oval.
The park is linked into the adjacent areas
along the main Brook watercourse through walking/bike paths. It also
has a number of short bush trails through the small forest that give
marvellous access for bird lovers.
Tawny Frogmouths Tree deformation
Amongst the Eucalypts, Angophora also thrive, though the specimen of Broadleaf Apple (species subvelutina), shown here, certainly suffered from some trauma in its developing stages.
There is a charming rivulet that runs
directly down through the park and provides a natural environment for
frogs and water birds, particularly after rainy periods. It carries
local stormwater emerging near the bottom end of a superb playground at
Eleventh Ave.
History
This Group started about 1990 with David
O'Gorman as Coordinator. The members undertook significant planting and
weeding control at this site with the help of students from local
schools and scouting groups.
After a lapse in activities for about two
years, the group started up again in September 2003 with Michael Wilson
as Coordinator.
Contact
The group holds its bushcare activities on the third Sunday
of the Month. Activities usually start close to the entrance of the park near the bottom of Eleventh Avenue, adjoining Benelong St., Kedron, (UBD Ref Map 140, D2). Vehicle parking is also very convenient about this point.
