Glen Retreat Bushcare Group

Group meetings

Group activities

The Glen Retreat Bushcare Group is a relatively new group, founded less than a year ago. The group cares for the small bush gully between Frasers Road and Glen Retreat Road at Mitchelton.

In the gully is an intermittent creek that meanders between hills and eventually flows into Kedron Brook. Many species of birds and native wildlife are found in this attractive place.

The group co-ordinator, Josephine McKay, is trained in horticulture and safe working practices. Josephine is always on hand to identify plants or offer advice if required.

The Parks team from the Brisbane City Council provides great support; they ensure there are always enough tools, gloves and equipment to use, and trees available to plant.

Group meetings

Glen RetreatVolunteers meet at the site on the 3rd Saturday afternoon of every month, usually for just a few hours. The group is working to gradually eradicate any weeds and plant local trees and shrubs in their place.

There are usually a couple of breaks during the afternoon for a cool drink, or a cup of tea, and so everyone gets to know each other a little better, and enjoy the afternoon's work. New members are always welcome, of course, and with people of all ages and backgrounds in the group - even young children - it is a fun way to spend the afternoon and help save the bush from the invasive weeds.

Anyone can just turn up on the day if they want to help.

Group activities

The group is only small and we work together well as a team to make some positive changes to help save this precious piece of bush from being overrun by introduced weeds. Chinese Elm, Cat's Claw Creeper and Madeira vine are the main threatening weeds.

Since the group has been meeting, a lot of rubbish has been removed from the site and the weeds have really been reduced. It's fair to say that the bush was in a very precarious state before the work began - the weeds were really getting out of control - but now it's starting to look much better.

There's still a lot of work to be done to restore this unique piece of bush to good health, but with the help of the local community, " Glen Retreat " will be a beautiful place once again - a haven for birds and wildlife.
