History and Location
Wahminda Grove Bushcare Group is at the top
end of Kedron Brook. (UBD Ref 117 F18) Our first gathering was on 28
July 2001. Kedron Brook is the boundary between Ferny Grove in Brisbane
and Ferny Hills in the Pine Shire. That's why our Group was named
‘Wahminda’ from Wahminda Park in the Pine Shire and ‘Grove’ from Ferny
Grove.
A five-year plan was devised and submitted
to the BCC, and approved to restore a section of Kedron Brook
approximately 750 metres long. We have a great working relationship
with both councils and have bush care days alternately in each council
area.
Quality
of the Brook
A lot of native vegetation still exists in
this part of Kedron Brook albeit covered by exotic plants in parts.
Under the weeds is a beautiful natural area well worthy of restoration.
The native flora very quickly re-establishes
once the weeds (particularly lantana) are removed. Tall Bracken Fern
appears very quickly and abundantly in these areas. Lomandra is also in
abundance.
The water quality of the Brook has been
monitored and found to be good.

Activities

Rubbish and weeds are removed from the site.
This has included a car body. Lantana cleared from the site is recycled
and used as a very effective mulch.
Butterfly plantings, clearing the creek
crossing and creating a pathway lined with Lomandra are some of the
activities underway or planned.
We are very pleased with the progress that
has been made although there is still a long way to go.
We would like to thank our band of
volunteers for their efforts and also extend an invitation to others to
join us.
