Working the riparian habitatIt's an unfortunate fact that the riparian section of the creek is one of the most difficult areas to improve or to maintain satisfactory habitat.If the banks are low and close to the water flow, any preparation or planting is subject to the usual run of flooding in the summer.. The actual banks can be quite steep to work on and to properly plant with suitable natives. Weeds such as Glycine, Madiera Vine, Japanese Sunflower and Lantana flourish in this area. If a good job of removal is done, the flight of birds up and down the waterway replenishes the weed population by carriage of fruits and seeds along the banks. Likewise, creeks will transport the same seed sources down with the next flood. The good news is that even a small group can maintain and improve their bushcare area providing they keep up the regular planting and maintenance but realistic goals must be set to ensure they obtain satisfaction from their work. |
Bushcare Group, Tuesday Tree Liberators, conduct a mozaic attack on weeds at Pony Club Bend, Mitchelton. They plant large trees and shrubs at spaced distances to eventually produce shady areas less suited for weed growth.
Being a small group, they would quickly run out of steam if they made an exhausting attack to remove whole banks of weeds at a time. (Tuesday 8 November 2011)

Come along! Our next planting in this project is on Saturday 3 March, 2012, 8.00 am to 12.00 md at Bob Cassimaty Park Picnic Grounds (opposite BP Service Station on Samford Road) at Ferny Grove (UBD Map 137 ref LI). This will cover Stage 2 of the plantings. Our usual morning tea may be held towards the end of the planting depending upon the nature of the day. This is a joint project involving Queensland Rail, BCC, Men of the Trees (MOTT), KBCB and local bushcare groups and community. Regular planting and maintenance activities are being programmmed for this project to continue right through to January 2013. Thumbnails Steve Baines gave a lively presentation on Australian freshwater fish at the KBCB February general and network meeting. (21 February 2012)  A popular view upstream of the bikeway bridge near Pony Club Bend. (8 November 2011)  A wall of Lantana over a steep bank does not overawe this small group at Pony Club Bend, Mitchelton.  The steady advance into the weed mass through the planting of suitably sized plants gradually eats away the Japanese Sunflower (followed by regular close weeding!).  Morning strollers on the bikeway near Pony Club Bend on a pleasant sunny morning. |
