A letter of introduction from our President

I would like to inform you of our successful environmental education program – “Down at Your Local Creek” – for upper primary students in schools in the catchment of Kedron Brook.

Down at Your Local Creek (DAYLC) is an interactive program providing students with an opportunity to learn about and protect their local waterway environment by developing their understanding of catchments and ecological monitoring. The program is designed to instil a sense of environmental stewardship and to provide students with the skills, knowledge and awareness required to protect local waterways. Through this program, we are aiming to provide a quality learning experience that is locally relevant and interesting to students in a structured and consistent way.

The program involves two sessions; one classroom session and one outdoor session. While the classroom session is not essential, it will compliment and enhance the learning outcomes of the outdoor session. The classroom component is facilitated either by the Kedron Brook Creek Ranger or the teacher, while the outdoor activities are facilitated by an experienced educator and an ecologist.

The Down At Your Local Creek Flyer (pdf, 1.14 MB) describes the program. This information has been sent to the Principals of primary schools within our catchment that may be interested in the program during 2009 or 2010.

By way of background, our organisation has been working in the Kedron Brook catchment since 2001 and is affiliated with the Brisbane Catchments Program of the Brisbane City Council. The Branch’s aim is to protect and improve the environment of Kedron Brook by encouraging communication, coordination and education of those who live in, manage and influence the catchment. Working with schools in the catchment is a key strategy to achieve this and members of our organisation (past and present) have worked with a number of Kedron Brook schools to this effect. Through this program, we are aiming to provide a quality learning experience that is locally relevant and interesting to students in a structured and consistent way.

If you have any queries regarding the program please contact us by or on 3407-0836.

We look forward to working with you in the near future.

Regards
