About Men of Trees
Men of Trees (MOTT) Queensland is a non-profit, non-political organisation dedicated to fostering planting, maintenance, and protection of trees to enhance biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems. Within Kedron Brook catchment, MOTT collaborates Kedron Brook Catchment Branch of Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (WPSQ), Habitat Brisbane, Moreton Bay Regional Council, and local bushcare groups. Their mission is to protect and improve natural areas, particularly through supporting Mountains to Mangroves wildlife corridor, ensuring a thriving habitat for native flora and fauna.[](http://www.mottqld.com.au/)
Our Activities in Kedron Brook Catchment
MOTT is actively involved in bushcare activities across Kedron Brook Catchment, focusing on tree planting, weed control, and habitat restoration. Their weekly Saturday morning sessions bring volunteers together to enhance ecological health of catchment. Key activities include:
- Tree Planting and Revegetation: MOTT organises regular planting events to restore native vegetation. They have planted thousands of native trees and plants at sites like Bob Cassimaty Park, where over 3,300 plants were added to offset vegetation loss from railway upgrades and storms, and Camoola Street Park, supported by an $8,000 Brisbane City Council grant in 2013. These efforts strengthen Mountains to Mangroves corridor.
- Weed Management: Volunteers tackle invasive species such as Chinese elm, camphor laurel, Madeira vine, Morning Glory, and Glycine, which threaten native ecosystems. Significant weed control has been achieved at Brook Park, support from grants by Brisbane City Council and former Pine Rivers Shire Council, preserving eucalypt forest remnant.
- Support for Bushcare Groups: MOTT works closely Habitat Brisbane bushcare groups at locations including Cedar Creek, Keperra Picnic Grounds, Bob Cassimaty Park, Arbor Park, Thomsett Park, Camoola Street Park and Keryn Place Park. They provide expertise, equipment, and volunteer support to enhance planting and maintenance efforts.
- Community Engagement and Events: MOTT participates in community-driven projects, such as 2013 Camoola Street Park revegetation launch and Glideways in Ferny Grove Project, which included community tree planting days to support squirrel glider habitats. These events foster community pride and environmental awareness.
- Habitat Restoration: By planting native species and maintaining forest remnants, MOTT enhances wildlife habitats for birds, lizards, gliders and other species. Their work improves water quality and supports biodiversity in Kedron Brook Catchment, a vital urban waterway.
